Needs for absolute references

The activity performed by a system is visible depending on the available data, and on the decision-maker and observer’s training. An image of the system is a hyperspace in the n-dimensional space synthesized out of the values of pre-established n indicators. There is a need for indicators that should synthesize indirectly an image of the system and of the efficiency of its operation. A system cannot regard at itself from outside, the creature cannot judge the Creator (Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, <Why hast thou made me thus?>, Romans 9.20). There must be a reference regarding the objectives that must be accomplished or referential values of the indicators that are useful in the optimal control and in the continuous management of the system. They are references like angels [Plesu A. (2003) Despre ingeri, Editura Humanitas]: “…the angels are the heavenly ’double’ of man. We are always accompanied by our ’pattern’, by our improved portrait. And we are or we should be in a permanent dialogue with the possible of this portrait. The angel offers to each of our acts the benchmarks of his work, namely his ideal drawing. Beside each ’is’, the angel places a ’how it should be’. He conjugates incessantly at conditional tense the flow of our life, as we would do if we were in his condition”.

The objective of the decision-maker, being either an individual person or a certain community, must be only one: maximum efficiency (profit). The other indicators (speed, quality of service etc.) are instruments through which, this objective is accomplished. It is important to consider the life cycle profit (LCP) of the product or of the logistics service, as well as the cost throughout many generations, if there are considered the effect outside the life cycle. There should be considered the profit during its life cycle, as well as after its life cycle, profit that tends to zero after the disappearance of the product and of its consequences. Consequently, there must be considered a relevant cycle (RC) for profit (efficiency) that may be longer than its life cycle (LC).

The progressive performance is an absolute reference of normality. The human being must naturally achieve the things only towards better results. The systems created by human beings must optimize an indicator, a simple or multi-criteria decision-making function. That is why, a joint stock company, or an institution must always advance in efficiency. The same idea is expressed by the Romanian philosopher Noica, for whom, it is valuable everything that brings a plus of being [Pamfil L. (2005) Etica a la roumaine în viziunea lui Noica, ID – nov.2005]. Ethics is the art of getting a plus of being without interfering negatively with the principles of moral nature. This could suggest a definition of the sustainability concept.

The lack of trend towards increasing performances is equivalent to remaining within a range of the n-dimensional space of the indicators (for n=3, the range is a sphere). If someone stays in the range he does not take the risk of getting into conflict with the outside world [Dumitrescu S. (2005) Ingerii domnului Plesu, ID sept. 2005]. The range or the gap (the interval and the hole, the empty space) represents inhabitable and uninhabitable (intangible) spaces. But, any stagnation usually leads to catastrophe, as artistically expressed in a famous play: „A people that does not move forward, stagnates. It may even go backwards” [I.L. Caragiale, A Lost Letter].
